Tarmac/Surfacing Contracts Manager
About the role
The Tarmac/Surfacing Contracts Manager will work within the EC Surfacing operational structure, reporting to the Operations Manager and Operations Director.
Core duties and responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day delivery of tarmac and surfacing contracts, from award through to completion, ensuring works are carried out productively, efficiently and in line with company procedures.
- Plan, programme and coordinate surfacing works, including labour, plant and materials, to meet client and contractual deadlines.
- Act as the principal point of contact for clients, consultants and framework partners on assigned contracts, building and maintaining strong working relationships.
- Provide direct line management and supervision to site supervisors, foremen and operative teams, ensuring consistent delivery standards across all surfacing operations.
- Ensure all works are carried out in accordance with relevant specifications, quality standards and Highways/CDM requirements.
- Monitor contract costs, valuations and variations, liaising with the commercial and accounts team to ensure accurate monthly cost and revenue reporting.
- Manage subcontractors and suppliers, including the procurement and scheduling of surfacing materials such as asphalt, bitumen and aggregates.
- Build and maintain good relationships with clients, framework suppliers and design consultants, supporting repeat business opportunities.
- Work with the Pre Construction & Estimating Director to ensure a smooth handover of secured work from the tender and estimating stage into live operations.
- Identify and resolve site issues promptly, escalating to the Operations Manager or Operations Director where required.
- Maintain accurate site records, including site diaries, as-built information and material testing/compliance documentation.
- Keep up to date on relevant changes in standards, specifications and legislation affecting the surfacing industry.
- Ensure all staff under your management comply with their job responsibilities and achieve a good standard of work.
Health and safety responsibilities
- Ensure the company health and safety reporting lines are followed and maintained on all contracts.
- Support accident, incident and near-miss investigations by providing statements and evidence where required.
- Follow and adhere to risk assessment controls, Safe Systems of Work and PPE requirements.
- Report accidents, incidents and near misses.
- Ensure the fulfilment of the health and safety element of all staff roles under your management.
- Set a personal example regarding health and safety matters, promoting the safety culture through observations, site standards and workplace safety.
- Comply with all legal requirements.
- Take care of your own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by your actions.

Essential qualifications and experience
- Full driving licence.
- CSCS Managers Card.
- SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme).
- Previous relevant industry experience.
- Experience managing people.

- Excellent knowledge of IT.
- Knowledge of surfacing materials, specifications and testing requirements.
- Good organisation and time-management skills.
- Courteous and polite manner with customers.
- Strong organisational, administrative and planning skills.
